For a unique reason, the Regional institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital is exceptional in ophthalmic arena. With its unsurpassed Elliot's museum , the institute asserts itself as the saviour in evolution of the practice of ophthalmology.
Conceived by an eminent pathologist and ophthalmologist, Lt. Col. R. E. Wright (Former Superintendent., Mar 1920 – Nov 1938 ), the museum had its inception in the pre-independence era. Aptly named after Lt. Col. R. H. Elliot (Superintendent., Apr 1904 – Apr 1913 ), who had contributed greatly to the field of ophthalmology, the museum is a treasure house of ophthalmic teaching and practice over the last century.
Renovated in the year 1979 under guidance of Dr. E. T. Selvam , the museum stands well preserved to date, demonstrating the roots and history of ophthalmology for students to revere and learn.
Currently the museum is sited in the first floor of the Elliot's School of Ophthalmology on the old hospital grounds and is spread over an area of 6000 Sq. ft. and is accessible to individual on the authority of the Director.
The museum houses a repertoire of:
 |
An extraordinary exhibit of optical devices such as Old Slit Lamps, Keratometer, Phoropters, ophthalmometer. |
 |
Ophthalmometer |
|
Olden day Slit lamp |
Acclaimed as the finest by several distinguished ophthalmologists who have visited the museum from all around the world, the museum stands modestly in the modern world to reminisce the splendour of ophthalmology.
